Best slot game features to filter by (and what each one means)

A feature label tells you what a slot can do, not how it plays. Here is what each label means, which to filter by first, and how to check RTP, volatility and max win with real numbers.

Best slot game features to filter by (and what each one means)
Key takeaways
  • Filter by one mechanic first (free spins, Hold & Win, Megaways, bonus buy or jackpot), then add volatility. Theme comes last.
  • A feature label is a clue, not a rule book: the same label can behave differently from one slot to the next, and some features are removed by country.
  • Volatility and RTP are independent. In our data, Mythic Wolf is low volatility but has a lower RTP (94.80%) than medium-volatility Sugar High (96.20%).
  • Volatility labels do not rank max wins: in our reviews, medium-volatility Le Bandit tops out at 10,000x while very-high-volatility Merge Up stops at 5,000x.
  • Bonus buy changes your cost per round, not the odds: at a 100x price and a 0.50 stake, ten purchases cost the same as 1,000 base spins.

Slot game features are the rules layered on top of basic spinning: free spins, Wilds, multipliers, Hold & Win rounds, bonus buy and jackpots. A label tells you what a game can do, but not how often, how much or at what risk. This guide explains what each feature means, which to filter by first, and how to check the figures that decide whether a slot suits your budget.

What are the main slot game features?

Each feature label describes one mechanic, and one slot can carry several. The table shows what each does and what to read in the rules before you play.

Feature What it does What to check in the rules
Wild symbol Substitutes for other paying symbols Which symbols it cannot replace, usually scatters and bonus symbols
Scatter symbol Pays or triggers a feature wherever it lands, not on a set line How many you need to trigger the bonus
Free spins A set of bonus spins awarded by a trigger inside the game Trigger count, whether it can retrigger, and whether multipliers or extra Wilds apply
Multiplier Increases a win by a stated factor Whether it applies to every win, only in free spins, or only on some spins
Cascading (tumbling) reels Winning symbols disappear and new ones drop in, allowing chained wins on one spin Whether multipliers grow with each cascade and reset afterwards
Hold & Win Locks special symbols in place while respins add more Trigger count, number of respins and whether they reset
Megaways Reels change height each spin, so the number of ways to win changes The maximum number of ways and how the bonus is triggered
Bonus buy Pay a multiple of your stake to trigger a feature directly The price, the RTP of the bought version, and whether it is allowed in your country
Jackpot A prize separate from normal line or ways wins Whether it is progressive or fixed, and how it is triggered
Autoplay and turbo Automatic spins and faster animations Whether your market allows them (see below)

Free spins are the most common feature, and the rules behind them vary a lot. Our top free spins slots list ranks games where the bonus round is central.

Hold & Win is a cash-collect round in which qualifying symbols stick while you get respins. Compare games on our Hold & Win slots page by volatility and max win, because the label alone says little about either.

Megaways is a reel mechanic in which each reel shows a different number of symbols on every spin. Big Time Gaming’s own Bonanza Falls page states up to 117,649 ways to win, which is seven symbols on each of six reels (7 x 7 x 7 x 7 x 7 x 7).

The original Bonanza launched in 2016, and Big Time Gaming licenses the mechanic to other studios, so a Megaways slot is not always from the studio that invented it. Our top Megaways slots list shows RTP and max win side by side.

What is the difference between progressive and fixed jackpots?

A progressive jackpot grows as qualifying bets feed a shared prize pool, so its size changes. A fixed jackpot is a set prize tied to a single game and does not grow from a shared pool. Our jackpot slots page covers both, and the Slot Feature Dictionary defines every term with live game counts.

Which slot game features should you filter by first?

Filter by one mechanic first, such as free spins or Hold & Win, then add a volatility band. Theme comes last because it changes the artwork, not the way the game pays.

Apply one filter at a time. Stacking four at once hides games that match three of your four preferences, and you never learn which filter emptied the list. If results vanish, clear filters one by one rather than starting again.

The steps below show the order we would use.

The order to apply slot filters
  1. 1
Pick one mechanicFree spins, Hold & Win, Megaways, bonus buy or jackpot. One only, so you can see what each filter removes.
  2. 2
Add a volatility bandLow for frequent smaller wins, high for rarer, bigger swings. Match it to your budget.
  3. 3
Check RTPRead it per 100 staked. Each point of RTP is 1 per 100 over the long run.
  4. 4
Check max win at your stakeMultiply the max win by your bet. It is a ceiling, not a typical result.
  5. 5

Which slot features are removed in some countries?

Bonus buy, autoplay, turbo spins and slam stop are the features most often missing, and the UK is the best-known example. UK-licensed casinos do not offer bonus buy, and studios ship UK versions of their games with the button stripped out.

The same applies to Pragmatic Play titles such as Gates of Olympus and Sweet Bonanza: bonus buy exists internationally but is unavailable on UK-licensed sites, while the maths model underneath stays the same. Speed features went too: the UK slot-design rules that banned turbo spins and slam stops took effect on 31 October 2021.

The practical point is that a feature on a game’s page in one country may not exist in yours. Check the in-game menu, and use our bonus buy slots list, which flags banned markets, before you pick a game for its buy option.

How do features affect RTP, volatility and max win?

Features do not set RTP or volatility on their own; those are separate figures you read for each game. RTP (return to player) is the long-run share of stakes a game pays back. Volatility describes how uneven those returns are: low means smaller, more frequent wins, high means rarer and bigger swings.

Here are two games from our data side by side. Both are from Rival Powered and both have free spins.

They share free spins. Sugar High has the highest RTP in our data (96.20%). Mythic Wolf is the calmer pick at Low volatility.

The surprise is that the low-volatility game has the lower RTP. Mythic Wolf lists 94.80% and Sugar High 96.20%, so over 100 staked in your currency Mythic Wolf returns 94.80 on average (an expected cost of 5.20) and Sugar High returns 96.20 (an expected cost of 3.80). Across 1,000 staked, that gap is 14. Many studios release the same game at several RTP settings, so our data lists one version and the game’s own info panel is the final word.

Does a high max win mean high volatility?

No. Max win is the ceiling on one round, expressed as a multiple of your stake, and volatility is how unevenly wins arrive. The two usually travel together but not always, as these games from our reviews show.

Game Volatility (our data) Max win At a 1.00 stake
Fortune Tiger Medium 2,500x 2,500
Mahjong Ways Medium 2,893x 2,893
Merge Up Very high 5,000x 5,000
Le Bandit Medium 10,000x 10,000
Gates of Olympus 1000 Very high 15,000x 15,000
Fire in the Hole 3 Very high 70,000x 70,000
Dead or Alive 2 High 100,000x 100,000

Le Bandit is medium volatility with a 10,000x ceiling, twice Merge Up’s 5,000x on a very-high-volatility label. Dead or Alive 2 is rated high, not very high, yet has the biggest ceiling here. Read the label and the max win together, and use the Max-Win Reality Check to turn the multiple into money at your own stake.

On Mythic Wolf and Sugar High the same sum applies. At a 0.50 stake, Sugar High’s 5,000x is 2,500 and Mythic Wolf’s 1,301x is 650.50. That is a ceiling, not a typical result.

What is hit frequency, and is it the same as RTP?

Hit frequency is the share of spins that pay anything, including wins smaller than your stake. It is not the same as RTP. Big Time Gaming’s Bonanza page lists a hit frequency of 37.94% next to a 26,000x max payout and 96.11% RTP, so about 38 in 100 spins pay something, yet most of those wins return less than the 100% you need to break even.

What does bonus buy really cost?

Bonus buy changes your cost per round, not your odds. Take a hypothetical slot with a 100x buy price and a 0.50 stake: each purchase costs 50 in your currency, so ten purchases cost 500, the same as 1,000 base spins at 0.50.

If the bought round returns 96% on average, each 50 purchase returns 48 and costs 2 in expectation. The catch is the spread: a bought feature can return far less than its price several times in a row. Check the bought version’s own RTP, which can differ from the base game, then run your numbers through the Bonus Buy Cost Calculator.

Do themes and reel layouts change how a slot plays?

A theme does not change how a slot plays. It is the story and artwork, so a candy slot and a wolf slot can share identical mechanics.

Our data shows this clearly. Mythic Wolf (Animals & Wildlife, Magic & Fantasy) and Sugar High (Candy & Sweets) share a studio and a free spins feature while looking nothing alike. If you like the candy style, slots like Sugar Rush 1000 lists similar games, but check their rules before assuming they play the same.

Layout matters more than theme. Paylines follow set paths across the reels, while ways-to-win systems count matching symbols on adjacent reels. Read the actual layout, not the format label.

Common mistakes when choosing by feature

  • Treating bonus buy as better value. It raises your cost per round. Compare the bought version’s RTP, not the base game’s.
  • Reading free as free money. A demo uses virtual credits and nothing is withdrawable. A real-money slot’s free spins follow that game’s own rules.
  • Trusting the volatility label alone. Pair it with max win and bet range, as the table above shows.
  • Choosing by a popular or new tag. Tags describe categorisation. They do not predict the next result.
  • Ignoring the bet range. A slot whose minimum bet is too high for your budget ends a session quickly, whatever its features.

Do features change how long you play?

Features matter less to session length than most people expect. In a Journal of Gambling Studies tracking study of 43,731 players at a European operator, a game’s structural characteristics alone explained only 7.7% of the variance in the number of bets placed in a session.

Speed is the structural lever regulators chose to act on, which is why autoplay and turbo went first in the UK. At home, your stake and spin speed shape a session more than a feature label does. Our Session Calculator estimates how long a budget lasts on average at your stake.

How to build your slot shortlist

Pick the one mechanic you want, add a volatility band, then compare RTP, max win at your stake and the bet range. Confirm the feature is available in your country. Keep three or four games, view them side by side with the compare tool, and choose on theme only when the numbers are close.

Questions people ask

What are slot game features?

Slot game features are rules that add to a slot's base play, such as free spins, Wild symbols, multipliers, cascading reels, Hold & Win rounds, bonus buy and jackpots. Each one changes how a round is triggered or paid, and the rules differ from game to game.

How do I find slots with a specific feature?

Use a feature filter or mechanic page rather than searching by theme. On SlotsDiscovery you can browse free spins, Hold & Win, Megaways, bonus buy and jackpot slots, then narrow by volatility and RTP.

Does a bonus feature mean a slot pays more?

No. A feature changes how the game plays, not its long-run return. RTP, volatility and max win are separate figures, so compare them instead of assuming a game with more features pays better.

What is the difference between a progressive and a fixed jackpot?

A progressive jackpot grows as qualifying bets feed a shared prize pool. A fixed jackpot is a set prize tied to one game, so it does not grow from a shared pool.

Is bonus buy available everywhere?

No. UK-licensed casinos do not offer bonus buy, and studios ship UK versions of games with the button removed. Rules in other markets differ and change, so check the game's own menu for your country.

What is hit frequency on a slot?

Hit frequency is the share of spins that pay anything, including wins smaller than your stake. A high hit frequency does not mean a high RTP or a big max win.
